Launch of inter-Afghan peace negotiations in Doha today
Statement by the Spokesperson of the Ministry for Europe and Foreign Affairs (September 12, 2020)
Inter-Afghan peace negotiations opened in Doha today.
The Afghan peace process will have to respond to the imperatives of justice for the victims of this conflict and terrorism.
France will also pay close attention to ensures that this process is inclusive, includes effective participation of women and guarantees republican institutions as well as democratic and human rights gains since 2001. The Council of the European Union of May 29, 2020 recalled that the European Union’s political and financial support for Afghanistan would in particular be conditional on compliance with these key principles.
As provided in the United Nations Security Council resolution 2532 (2020), an immediate humanitarian ceasefire is essential, especially in the context of the Covid-19 pandemic. The protection of civilian populations, in particular women and children, but also medical personnel and humanitarian workers, must be an absolute priority.
France remains ready to provide support to the peace process at the request of the Parties. It intends to continue its commitment, alongside its Afghan and international partners, for the security of the Afghan people and the economic and social development of Afghanistan.
